IAFP 2018, Salt Lake City

Not much new here on the food safety front. I attended two professional development group (PDG) sessions–Dairy Quality and Safety and Developing Future Food Safety Professionals. We (in DFFSP) are trying to put together a session on food safety communication, which I will assist with. I may have said more in that meeting than I should have… ah well.

The interesting tidbit from the meeting today is that there is a proposal to stick all the FDA’s food safety functions under the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service. I actually think this is a good idea, since our current food safety regulatory system is horribly convoluted. However, it will take an act of congress to do this, and could be a net negative if the total funding for food inspection goes down.

Another interesting discussion was on how to better reach consumers with good and accurate information they can understand on food safety. If you have thoughts, leave a comment.
